NEW YORK, NEW YORK [September 17, 2025] - Today, The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch Whisky unveils the Second Edition of its rarest collection to date, The Balvenie Fifty Collection, a trilogy celebrating half a century of dedication, skill, and innovation at the Speyside distillery. Following the First Edition's debut in 2024, this Second Edition continues the extraordinary journey of three unique releases that will culminate in 2026.
This exclusive whisky is a masterful marriage of casks. Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie expands the collection’s profile by combining the inaugural release - a rare single cask expression drawn exclusively from a European oak refill butt filled in 1973 - with an American oak hogshead, also filled in 1973. Only 97 bottles will be available globally, marking one of the rarest and most interesting releases from The Balvenie Distillery.
The Balvenie Fifty Second Edition opens with a bouquet of sticky toffee, violet, and rose, underpinned by decades of warming oak and spice. On the palate, molten dates, sweet soft currants, and a gentle citrus zest unfold, seamlessly layered over creamy honey and a buttery finish. A lingering oak presence endures, leaving a refined and lasting impression.
“The Balvenie Fifty Collection pays tribute to the makers, craftspeople and custodians who have watched over our liquid for the past five decades,” said Kelsey McKechnie. “For The Second Edition, we selected an American oak hogshead filled in 1973 to build on the legacy of the inaugural release. The time spent maturing in American oak has nurtured a beautifully balanced character, with notes of sweet honey and warming oak. This profile was chosen to complement the European oak influence of The First Edition, creating a marriage of casks that brings both contrast and continuity to the flavor thread running through the trilogy. The collection reflects our respect for tradition and our commitment to looking to the future by preserving the rare crafts of whisky making from barley to bottle.”
The Balvenie Fifty Collection draws on the heritage of the Speyside distillery and its five rare crafts, rooted in the traditions established by former Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE and the craftspeople who filled this very cask in 1973. Many of those same artisans remain at the distillery today, carrying forward decades of knowledge and pioneering practices such as cask finishing. Now, Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie continues this legacy, applying her artistry in marrying and re-marrying casks to craft the unique flavor profile that defines each release.
The rarity of this expression is matched by its exquisite presentation. Each hand-blown bottle is individually numbered and housed in a case crafted by Croglin, a bespoke workshop in Cumbria. The design features seven layers of wood in a helix structure, a darker stain than the inaugural release, and a 14-carat gold-plated brass display, creating a visual experience befitting the whisky within.
The Balvenie Fifty Second Edition is rolling out now worldwide, with 13 bottles available in the United States for a MSRP of $55,000. For more information, visit thebalvenie.com or @thebalvenie on social media.
