Mezcal Trailblazer Honors Milestone Anniversary with Year-Long Programming

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (MARCH 18, 2026) – Ilegal Mezcal celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, reflecting on two decades of mezcal mastery born in Oaxaca and a legacy that shaped the mezcal movement. From its beginnings at Café No Sé in Antigua, Guatemala, to its evolution into an internationally recognized mezcal pioneer, the brand’s 20-year journey reflects a commitment to artisanal production, cultural influence, and a bold, unconventional spirit.

An Iconic Brand Built on Craftsmanship and Culture

Founded as a small-batch mezcal shared among musicians, artists, and bartenders, Ilegal Mezcal rose to prominence in U.S. cocktail culture through an on-premise-first approach, uncompromising quality, and deep ties to music and storytelling. Rituals like the Musicians Breakfast — a shot of mezcal with a cold beer — embodied its ethos. Early on, the brand helped redefine the category by introducing Joven, Reposado, and Añejo expressions when most U.S. offerings focused solely on unaged styles, cementing its role as a trailblazer in modern mezcal.

At the heart of Ilegal Mezcal are Armando and Alvaro Hernández — fourth-generation mezcaleros from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca — whose deep-rooted craftsmanship has helped define the spirit’s character and quality. Ilegal Mezcal Founder John Rexer first met the brothers while sourcing mezcal for Café No Sé, forging a relationship grounded in mutual respect and a shared commitment to tradition. That partnership endures today, ensuring exceptional quality while creating sustained economic opportunity within their local communities.

“Thank you to all those who came along for the dusty journey. To those who carried the first clandestine bottles across borders, and to those noble pirates and nomads who filled our nights with song and story. To all the musicians of Cafe No Se, for the madness and spirits they conjured... and the many other troubadours across many borders, gracias. Oaxaca Mexico…gracias. Antigua Guatemala...gracias. Y lo mas importante, a los maestros y trabajadores que hacen el mezcal sin prisa, sin pausa, sin miedo...gracias, gracias,” said Rexer.

A Celebration 20 Years in the Making

The renowned Bar Ilegal program will continue to engage audiences nationwide through cultural partnerships, pop-ups, and immersive experiences rooted in music, hospitality, and community. In 2026, activations will take place in Ilegal Mezcal’s long-standing Bar Ilegal locations in New York, Austin, and Nashville. Complementing these moments, the Founder Dinner Series will feature intimate gatherings in select cities, with both Rexer and Gilbert Marquez, Global Brand Ambassador, in attendance, honoring Ilegal Mezcal’s heritage.

New this year, Ilegal Mezcal will extend its storytelling beyond the bar through off-premise activations, translating the brand’s cultural DNA into retail experiences and materials designed to engage consumers and inspire discovery in homes, shops, and beyond. A portion of Ilegal Mezcal’s 20th anniversary initiatives will support LGBTQ+ organizations, reflecting the brand’s long-standing commitment to community and inclusivity.

“Rather than a single moment, we’re celebrating this milestone anniversary with a year-long toast to where Ilegal Mezcal has been and where we’re headed next,” said Kaylan Rexer, Ilegal Mezcal Chief Marketing Officer. “In the spirit of Ilegal Mezcal’s rich individuality, this year is about community-led gatherings with music, art, shared meals, bottles passed down long tables, and the kind of cultural moments that feel intimate, unexpected, and undeniably Ilegal.”

To memorialize the 20th anniversary celebrations, Ilegal Mezcal is unveiling a rooftop bar at Palenque Mal de Amor in Oaxaca, an immersive experience welcoming both travelers and locals, while deepening the connection between place, craft, and culture.
